All-weather cables for really harsh conditions

What is Accordia AllWeather® technology?

Accordia AllWeather technology is the design of an outdoor cable in such a way that it can withstand many years in Greek special conditions.

What is so special about outdoor cables?

Outdoor cables are exposed to UV solar radiation, atmospheric humidity and large temperature fluctuations during the 24 hour period.
UV radiation alters the outer surface of ordinary plastic materials, such as PVC, makes them brittle and creates microcracks (oxidative photodegradation).
Moisture passes inside the cable either through these microcracks or through diffusion, oxidizes the conductors, alters the insulation and ultimately leads the cable to failure.
The combination of UV and humidity is a slow death for the cable.

What is so special about Greek conditions?

Greece is among the top countries in Europe in terms of sunshine. (For example, Rhodes has twice as many hours of sunshine a year as Brussels).
Greece is also 9th in the world based on coastline length. Coastline means air with humidity + salt. Due to the presence of salt, the air of coastal areas has 10 times more corrosive power than mainland air.
Greek environment is much tougher to outdoor cables than Central Europe conditions.

What is different about AllWeather® cables and how do you do it?

Accordia AllWeather® cables last much longer outdoors than plain cables.

We achieve this by using, as the case may be, a combination of many factors, such as the choice of plastic materials, mixing them with additives, the use of two or more layers of insulation/sheathing, dimensional modification, the use of water blocking materials and the use of tinned or silver plated copper wires.

What are water blocking materials?

Water blocking is a special superabsorbent powder that is applied under the cable sheath. (The material is similar to that found in baby diapers.) Under normal circumstances it is unnoticed. If it comes in contact with water, it absorbs it, swells and turns into a gel. This seals any cracks, while preventing moisture from penetrating further and affecting conductors and insulation.

And how do you test these cables?

We run extensive inhouse tests  in climatic chamber, UV chamber, as well as water penetration tests. Occasionaly we also use external laboratories for independent long term weathering testing e.g. according to ISO 4892-2

To which cables is the AllWeather® technology applied?

Το all categories of cables that we manufacture, that is Coaxial, EIB/BUS/KNX, Alarm, CCTV, Audio, Data, Signal and Control
